Pre-Season Outlook
Downs mostly worked the slot as a rookie third-round pick last year, ranking 13th among wide receivers in routes (601) while playing in an offense that relied heavily on three-wide formations. He averaged 5.3 catches for 63.3 yards on 7.0 targets over his first eight games, before a knee injury limited his playing time Weeks 9-10. Downs never missed any games but averaged just 3.6 catches for 35.4 yards on 5.4 targets in seven outings after a Week 11 bye, fading from fantasy relevance rather than building on his fast start. At 5-9, 171, he may always be limited to the slot, especially because he doesn't have the wheels (4.48) to make up for his lack of size. Downs is the favorite to be Indy's slot receiver again this season, but his routes figure to be scaled back with the Colts bringing in second-round pick WR Adonai Mitchell and likely shifting to a more run-heavy offense led by QB Anthony Richardson and RB Jonathan Taylor.

Three grabs in Week 18
Downs caught all three of his targets for 48 yards in Saturday's 23-19 loss to the Texans.
Analysis: Downs paced the Colts in receiving yards in the season finale, wrapping up his rookie campaign with 68 catches for 771 yards and two touchdowns on 98 targets. His steady involvement in the passing attack down the stretch should bode well for Downs as he continues to grow into his role within the Indianapolis offense heading into Year 2. Quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder) should return to full health for the 2024 season, which could bolster the outlooks for Downs and the Colts' other…read more

Draws only two targets
Downs caught two passes for 52 yards on two targets in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Raiders.
Analysis: Gardner Minshew threw only 20 targeted passes Sunday, so Downs' usage was quite low despite the impressive explosiveness. Downs tends to line up in the slot for Indianapolis, and the Raiders' best corner is slot man Nate Hobbs, so it makes sense that the rookie would struggle to get open consistently in this setting. His Week 18 matchup with Houston might be a more favorable matchup, though the Colts' run-heavy offense tends to leave little for Downs and Alec Pierce after WR1 Michael Pittman…read more

Modest numbers with nine targets
Downs brought in six of nine targets for 39 yards in the Colts' 29-10 loss to the Falcons on Sunday.
Analysis: Downs led the Colts in receptions and targets in the absence of Michael Pittman (concussion), but that didn't add up to much on the yardage front. The speedy rookie hasn't topped 40 receiving yards in any of the last four games, and he hasn't been over 43 since Week 8. Even if Pittman is sidelined again in Week 17 against the Raiders, Downs isn't a sure bet to benefit by any stretch.

Another quiet outing
Downs had three catches (on three targets) for 19 yards and three punt returns for 38 yards during Saturday's 30-13 victory versus the Steelers.
Analysis: The pleasant special-teams performance aside, Downs missed out on a prime opportunity to produce on offense after Michael Pittman departed with a concussion midway through the second quarter. Instead of turning his focus to the Colts' No. 2 wide receiver, quarterback Gardner Minshew spread the ball around to eight different players among his 18 completions, and only one of Downs' targets occurred after Pittman's exit. Considering Pittman will be subject to the protocol for head injuries in…read more

Another modest showing in loss
Downs secured all three targets for 32 yards in the Colts' 34-14 loss to the Bengals on Sunday.
Analysis: Downs put together his second straight three-catch effort and fifth consecutive sub-50-yard tally. The rookie wideout has flashed with much better production at times, but Gardner Minshew has been spreading the ball around to a wider variety of targets of late, helping lead to Downs' recent downturn.

Disappoints against Titans
Downs recorded three receptions on five targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 31-28 overtime win against the Titans.
Analysis: Downs saw 13 targets in Week 12, but he was unable to replicate that effort against the Titans. He was overshadowed by Michael Pittman and Alec Pierce, the latter of which is particularly concerning for Downs' potential volume moving forward. Overall, he's been limited to under 45 yards in four consecutive games and under 20 yards twice in that span.

Five grabs in Week 12 win
Downs brought in five of 13 targets for 43 yards in the Colts' 27-20 win over the Buccaneers on Sunday.
Analysis: Downs tied Michael Pittman for the team lead in targets but was much less efficient, compiling half of his teammate's catch total. Nevertheless, Downs' reception and receiving yardage tallies were both still good enough for second on the Colts on the afternoon, and his catch total was his highest since Week 8. Downs next sets his sights on a Week 13 road matchup against the Titans' vulnerable secondary.

Two catches in Frankfurt
Downs recorded two receptions on three targets for 40 yards in Sunday's 10-6 win over the Patriots.
Analysis: Downs played through a knee injury that was expected to keep him limited, and that came to fruition as he saw his lowest target total in a full game since Week 4. His primary contribution came on a 28-yard reception late in the fourth quarter that helped the Colts clinch a win. Heading into a bye, Downs should be able to return healthier for a Week 12 matchup against Tampa Bay.

Active, but likely limited Sunday
Downs (knee) is active for Sunday's game against the Patriots in Frankfurt, Germany, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
Analysis: Downs was unable to practice in any capacity this week, but he still showed enough progress in his recovery from a knee issue to take a questionable tag into Sunday. Though Downs ultimately attained active status after going through a pregame workout, Adam Schefter of ESPN relays that the Colts could be cautious with how they use the rookie wideout. If that's the case, Downs could cede more snaps than usual to Alec Pierce and Isaiah McKenzie, who may see expanded roles behind No. 1 wideout…read more

May be limited against New England
Downs (knee), officially listed as questionable, is expected to play but may be limited in Sunday's game against the Patriots, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Downs was limited to just 11 offensive snaps in Week 9 against Carolina due to the same knee injury. He failed to practice in any capacity leading up to Sunday's matchup against New England, suggesting he's still held back significantly by the issue. Regardless of his ability to contribute, Downs' status will become official shortly before the team's 9:30 a.m. ET kickoff.

Takes questionable tag into Sunday
The Colts list Downs (knee) as questionable for Sunday's game against the Patriots in Frankfurt, Germany.
Analysis: Though the questionable tag implies that Downs has a 50-50 shot of playing Sunday, his odds of suiting up may actually be lower, given that he failed to practice in any capacity from Wednesday through Friday. Whatever the case, the Colts will make an official call on Downs' status no later than 90 minutes before the 9:30 a.m. ET kickoff when the team releases its inactive list. Not practicing Thursday
Downs (knee) didn't practice Thursday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Downs was listed as a non-participant on Wednesday's estimated practice report, so the wideout's continued absence Thursday clouds his availability for Sunday's game against the Patriots. The Colts' final injury report of the week will be released Friday and will add further context regarding Downs' chances of suiting up Sunday. If Downs ends up sitting out, Isaiah McKenzie could be in line for an expanded role at receiver behind Michael Pittman and Alec Pierce.

No practice activity Wednesday
Downs (knee) was listed as a non-participant on Wednesday's estimated practice report.
Analysis: Downs was listed as questionable heading into this past Sunday's game against the Panthers with the same injury and played just 12 snaps before exiting with an apparent aggravation of the knee issue, according to Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star. Given that Wednesday's practice was a walk-through session, what Downs is able to do Thursday will provide the next layer of context regarding his status for Sunday's game against the Patriots. Injures knee Sunday
Downs suffered a knee injury during Sunday's contest at Carolina, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
Analysis: Prior to his departure, Downs gathered in his only target for 10 yards. As long as Downs is sidelined, Michael Pittman, Alec Pierce, Isaiah McKenzie and Juwann Winfree will be the Colts' options at wide receiver.

Available against Panthers
Downs (knee) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Panthers.
Analysis: After practicing fully Wednesday, Downs was added to the injury report Thursday due to a knee issue and finished the week with back-to back limited sessions. With his Week 9 availability confirmed, in the absence of any in-game setbacks or limitations, Downs -- who has 40 catches in eight games to date -- will look to maintain the momentum he's built over his last four outings. On track to play Sunday
Downs (knee) is on pace to play in Sunday's game at Carolina, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Downs was tacked onto the Colts' Week 9 injury report Thursday, practicing in a limited capacity that day and Friday and entering the weekend as questionable due to the knee issue. While he isn't 100 percent, he appears poised to go through a pregame warmup to see how the knee checks out. Officially questionable for Week 9
Downs (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Panthers.
Analysis: Downs was added to the injury report after a limited practice Thursday, and the rookie wide receiver was limited again Friday. He has yet to miss a game in his brief NFL career, but that streak could be in jeopardy heading into Downs' ninth game, a 4:05 ET kickoff Sunday. Downs and Michael Pittman have accounted for the majority of the Colts' receiving production recently, with Downs contributing 315 receiving yards and two touchdowns over the past four games.

Added to injury report
Downs (knee) was limited at practice Thursday.
Analysis: Downs wasn't listed on Wednesday's injury report, so the wideout's addition a day later makes his status worth tracking ahead of Sunday's game against the Panthers. If Downs ends up limited or out, Isaiah McKenzie and/or Juwann Winfree could pick up added Week 9 snaps alongside Michael Pittman and Alec Pierce.

Team-high receiving yardage in loss
Downs secured seven of nine targets for 72 yards and a touchdown in the Colts' 38-27 loss to the Saints on Sunday.
Analysis: Downs led the Colts in receiving yards while checking in second in receptions and receiving yards to Michael Pittman. Downs' catch total was also a season high, and the speedy rookie now has at least five receptions in four consecutive games. Given his impressive body of work, Downs will likely be heavily involved once again in a Week 9 road battle against the Panthers.

Breakout continues
Downs recorded five receptions on six targets for 125 yards and one touchdown in Sunday's 39-38 loss to the Browns.
Analysis: Downs led the team in targets, receptions and yards, most impressively out-pacing Michael Pittman. He began his performance with a 59-yard touchdown reception when he broke free from the Cleveland secondary down the right sideline. Downs chipped in two more receptions of more than 20 yards to top 100 yards in a game for the first time in his career. He's clearly established himself in the Colts' offense, commanding at least six targets in each of his last three games.

Catches first career TD
Downs had five receptions for 21 yards, including a two-yard touchdown, in Sunday's loss at Jacksonville.
Analysis: While he didn't repeat the strong efficiency from Week 5 (six receptions for 97 yards), Downs had eight targets and was second on the team in that category. With Alec Pierce leaving the game with a shoulder injury, Downs may have an even larger role Sunday against Cleveland.

Has breakout performance
Downs recorded six receptions on six targets for 97 yards in Sunday's 23-16 win over the Titans.
Analysis: Downs led the Colts in receptions and yards, both of which were also career-high marks. He did the majority of his damage on catches of 38, 27 and 25 yards -- two of which were delivered by Gardner Minshew. Downs also showed the ability to produce with Anthony Richardson (shoulder) under center, which could portend a bigger role in the offense moving forward.

Two catches in defeat
Downs secured two of three targets for 34 yards during Sunday's 29-23 overtime loss to the Rams.
Analysis: Downs made his biggest contribution to the game during the second quarter, snaring a deep ball from Anthony Richardson for 30 yards. The rookie wideout had enjoyed an expanding role on offense through the previous three games, but the entire Colts' receiving corps struggled against the Rams with no receiver topping 48 yards, which may help explain a dismal game for Downs.

Sees uptick in role
Downs recorded eight receptions on 12 targets for 57 yards in Sunday's 22-19 overtime win over the Ravens.
Analysis: Downs doubled his target total on the season with his performance Sunday, as he displayed rapport with backup quarterback Gardner Minshew. Volume was the most notable part of his performance, however, as his longest catch went for only 12 yards. Downs has made his mark in the short areas of the field in the first three games of his career, as he's tallied 15 receptions on 24 targets but totaled only 124 yards.

Four catches in Week 2 win
Downs brought in four of five targets for 37 yards in the Colts' 31-20 win over the Texans on Sunday.
Analysis: Downs again served as the No. 3 receiver, but as was the case in his NFL debut Week 1, he was more productive than No. 2 wideout Alec Pierce (2-28). Downs has displayed solid rapport with both Anthony Richardson (concussion) and Gardner Minshew, so he'll remain an interesting deep-league option for a Week 3 road battle against the Ravens.

Three receptions in NFL debut
Downs started as the slot receiver and had three receptions for 30 yards on seven targets in Sunday's loss to Jacksonville. He played on 57 of the offense's 72 snaps.
Analysis: Downs didn't have a big game in his NFL debut, but there were some encouraging signs. He was second on the team in targets, and Isaiah McKenzie, his preseason competition for the slot receiver role, played just one snap on offense. If rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson improves as a passer, Downs could be much more productive later in the season.

Listed as No. 3 receiver
Downs is listed as the starting slot receiver on Indianapolis' first unofficial depth chart of the regular season.
Analysis: Downs and Isaiah McKenzie were competing for the No. 3 receiver role during the preseason, but McKenzie was released Wednesday and then re-signed to the roster. Downs showed good chemistry with starting quarterback Anthony Richardson during training camp, but the rookie QB's proficiency on short passes remains in question heading into the regular season. Downs may start slowly and see his production grow later in the year as Richardson gets more comfortable.

Finishes without a catch
Downs had two targets and no catches in Thursday's 27-13 preseason win over the Eagles.
Analysis: Downs played a vast majority of the first-team snaps with Indianapolis largely operating from three-wide formations. He let a ball slip between his hands in tight coverage on a 3rd-and-7 and otherwise did little of note. Multiple recent reports suggested the rookie has been much busier at training camp, and it seems either he or Alec Pierce are most likely to emerge as Anthony Richardson's second-favorite target behind clear No. 1 Michael Pittman. Favorite for slot duties
Downs is believed to be the front-runner for the Colts' slot receiver job, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports.
Analysis: Downs has been competing with veteran Isaiah McKenzie for the job, but the rookie has had a "big summer" at Colts camp and appears to have the leg up in three-wide sets alongside Michael Pittman and Alec Pierce. With Anthony Richardson under center, however, it's unclear if Downs will find his way into 2023 fantasy value in an offense that might be able to only support one pass-catcher.

Makes two catches Saturday
Downs reeled in two of three targets for 20 yards during Saturday's 24-17 preseason win against the Bears.
Analysis: Downs returned the opening kickoff for 14 yards, and his first potential target occurred on the Colts' initial drive, but it was negated by an offensive pass interference call by teammate Pharaoh Brown. In addition to his contributions through the air and the kick return, Downs also had a five-yard punt return. Two receptions in preseason debut
Downs had two receptions for 29 yards on two targets in Saturday's preseason loss at Buffalo. He also had four kickoff returns for an 18.3 yard average.
Analysis: Downs worked with the second-team offense as Isaiah McKenzie got the start as the slot receiver. Downs showed a spark in the passing game, however. Downs had missed some practice time early in training camp with a sore knee, but it didn't look like an issue Saturday. Downs and McKenzie are battling for the starting slot receiver role, and a decision likely won't be made until late in the preseason.

Back at practice
Downs (knee), who missed some time this offseason, participated in practice Wednesday, Jake Arthur of Si.com reports.
Analysis: Now that he's back on the field for training camp, the 2023 third-round pick out of North Carolina will have a chance to compete for slot snaps with free-agent addition Isaiah McKenzie in a Colts receiver corps that also includes Michael Pittman and Alec Pierce. If Downs can secure a top three role out of the gate, he could gain some appeal in PPR formats regardless of whether who between Gardner Minshew and Anthony Richardson winds up as the team's Week 1 starting quarterback.

Dealing with minor knee injury
Downs missed practice Thursday with a knee injury, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
Analysis: Coach Shane Steichen described it as "a little bit of a knee issue" without elaborating any further. The third-round pick out of UNC isn't likely to be part of a high-flying pass attack his rookie year, but he did find a good place to earn early snaps once he moves past the knee injury, as Michael Pittman is the only player on Indy's roster with a 600-yard receiving season to his name. Alec Pierce had 593 yards as a rookie second-round pick last year, but it's possible he'd see fewer targets…read more
